MSO auditions for New Orchestra Members

The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra announces auditions for the following positions:
Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Percussion.
Audition Requirements for all EXCEPT PERCUSSION:

  • 2 scales (ranging between A Major and E-flat Major)  and the tonic arpeggios that go with them - Must be played in two octaves.  Must have one scale with sharps and one scale with flats.
  • 1 prepared piece - This piece must show off your skills and make you sound your best, but have appropriate difficulty level.  

Audition Requirements for Percussionists:

  • For fair judgement, percussionists will prepare these excerpts for their chosen percussion instrument.
  • Players can audition for each for three areas, or just one.
    • Snare drum and auxiliary percussion (triangle, cymbals, tambourine, etc.)
    • Mallet percussion
    • Timpani
  • For percussionists auditioning on mallet percussion, you may play any prepared piece.
  • Players should bring their own snare drum, triangle, tambourine, and all mallets. The bigger instruments will be provided.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018, beginning at 9:00 AM, at the Davis Theatre in Downtown Montgomery.  Click here to register.  Your audition registration form must be completed no later than 2 days prior to the audition date. Montgomery Music Project 2018-2019 Classes Announced

The Montgomery Music Project (MMP) announces its classes for the 2018-2019 school year.  The 2018-2019 session begins August 8, 2018. MMP offers five different classes based upon musician's age and experience:

Pre-Twinkle Level (Age 4 - Kindergarten)
Beginner Level (No experience necessary!)
Intermediate Level*
Advanced Level*
Mozart String Orchestra*

*requires an audition to assure proper placement

The mission of the Montgomery Music Project (MMP) is to develop young people and bring communities together through music. We do this by delivering affordable, high-quality music instruction to the children of Montgomery and the River Region and by uniting diverse geographic, ethnic, and socio-economic communities under the umbrella of the arts. Since 2011, MMP has provided highly trained teachers to give instruction in violin, viola, and cello, as well as in music theory, history, ear-training and more. MMP operates under the auspices of the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.

Montgomery Youth Orchestra 2018-2019 Auditions

Each year, approximately 70 young musicians from public and private schools throughout central Alabama participate in the Montgomery Youth Orchestra.  Placement in the orchestra is by audition, which will be held in the Choir Room of Eastmont Baptist Church, 4505 Atlanta Highway on September 8, 2018.  Auditions will start at 9:45 a.m. at Eastmont Baptist Church.
