The information below refers to the 2009 Vann
Vocal Institute but
will give singers an idea of what the 2011 Institute might offer.

The Vann Vocal Institute is a two-day workshop for 40 Alabama
singers designed to encourage excellence in singing. Made possible through the
generous bequest of Roy D. Vann and a grant from the Alabama State Council on
the Arts, the Institute will focus primarily on the operatic repertoire. Other
classical vocal genres will also be studied. All Institute activities will take
place at
Huntingdon College.
A series of public master classes and private coachings will allow each singer
to receive one-on-one instruction from highly respected individuals in the vocal
world. Classes in audition preparation/programming and resume' preparation
will also be given.

Three public master classes
will be led by Metropolitan Opera tenor
David Cangelosi
who appears regularly with the world's most prestigious opera companies.
A total of 15 singers will perform for Mr. Cangelosi during the three master
classes. The Institute pianist will accompany all master class performers. The
15 singers will be selected by prior audition through submitted compact discs of
their singing and resumes. All singers and alternates accepted to sing in the
master class will be notified well in advance of their arrival at the Vann Vocal

Private coachings
will be conducted by two nationally known vocal coaches and conductors,
Steven Crawford and
Elizabeth Buccheri.
An additional 25 singers will be scheduled to work with Maestro Crawford or Dr.
Buccheri in individual private coaching sessions which will take place
simultaneously with the public master classes. Singers will leave the master
classes shortly before their coaching in order to warm up sufficiently and
return to the master classes upon the conclusion of the coaching.
Accompanists will be provided. All singers and alternates accepted for
private coachings will be notified well in advance of their arrival at the Vann
Vocal Institute.
Recital: The Institute will conclude with the Vann Vocal Institute
Emerging Artists Recital which will be open to the public. Performers for the
recital will be chosen by Mr. Cangelosi from those appearing in his master
classes and will be announced toward the close of the Institute. Those appearing
on the Vann Vocal Institute Emerging Artists Recital will be accompanied by the
Institute pianist.
Eligibility: The Vann Vocal Institute is open to Alabama singers
ages 16-24 who have not completed undergraduate school.
Deadlines: All application forms, audition
compact discs/resumes, registration fee, and/or scholarship request forms must
be postmarked by March 23, 2009.
Fees: A registration fee of $25 will be charged to all
participants. This fee will cover Institute materials, the Director's Dinner on
April 17th and lunch on April 18th.

Host Hotel: The Springhill Suites by Marriott is the Host Hotel for
the Vann Vocal Institute and is holding a group of non-smoking rooms until April
10. The host rate at the Springhill Suites is $89.88 (including tax) for a room
with two double beds and a hideaway sofa (which accommodates 1-5 people).
Each room features a pantry area with a small refrigerator, microwave and
coffeemaker. Free local calls, high-speed internet, fax and copy services are
provided. The SpringHill Suites offers a nice, complimentary breakfast, free
wireless internet services, an indoor pool and a fitness center.
